Review of Malmaison Edinburgh

Written by Karen Bryan

I stayed at the Malmaison Edinburgh on a Monday night in June 2016. I booked the double room at a price of £47 on the Agoda website, during a Malmazing promotion. This flexible rate, which could be cancelled without penalty up to the day of arrival.

The hotel is located in Leith, Edinburgh’s port, a couple of miles from the city centre. However, there are plenty of cafes. bars and restaurants within a five minute walk from the hotel.

The Malmaison Edinburgh’s free car park is at the back of the building. If you’re travelling to Edinburgh by car, free parking is one of the big advantages of staying at a hotel out of Edinburgh city centre, where parking is expensive and it can be hard to find a space.

There no access to the Malmaison Edinburgh from the car park. It’s a couple of minutes walk to the front entrance, not great if it’s wet and you are wheeling a suitcase.

The friendly receptionist upgraded me to a superior room on the top floor at the front of the hotel. Room 419 had four windows. Below is the view of the Water of Leith.

The room was large, with a very comfortable king sized bed, armchair and office chair. The decor wasn’t to my taste; too dark with a grey carpet, cushions and curtains and black wardrobe, chairs and desk. The wallpaper on the wall behind the bed looked like billboards ripped off a wall.

There were four electrical sockets near the spacious desk area. The free WiFi had a pretty good signal.

There were bathrobes and slippers in the wardrobe. The towels were super soft and fluffy. The toiletries and the 100 ml size of both the shampoo and shower gel meant that there was a good amount for two people. The rain head shower was great.

I really enjoyed my stay at the Malmaison Edinburgh. £47 a night was very good value from money for a four star hotel in Edinburgh, especially with the upgrade to a superior room. I loved the views from the windows and moved the office chair between the windows. The colour scheme of the room wasn’t too my taste, but that’s a matter of personal preference. The comfort, quality and cleanliness of the room was excellent, and that’s more important to me.
