My Positive Experience With HMRC Web Chat

Written by Karen Bryan

hmrevenueIn mid February 2016, Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) sent me my tax code for the tax year 6 April 2016 to 5 April 2017.

For some reason unknown to me, there was an allocation of almost £7,000 of my annual towards income from an employer for whom I hadn’t worked for more than seven years.

I though that I’d better contact HMRC to try to get the mistake sorted before the start of the new tax year. I’ve heard some horror stories about the length of time spent trying to get through to HMRC by phone.

I thought it would be more straightforward to send a secure message. Plus that would give me a written record of the communication.

Then I noticed that there was a web chat facility available on the HMRC website. I thought Id’ give it a try.

Within two minutes of entering the initial information requested I was conversing with an HMRC employee. After explaining the issue, I was asked how I would like my annual allowance to be allocated. I was informed that my tax code would be amended, and a revised tax coding notice would be sent to me.

I received my amended tax code eight days later.

I was impressed with the HMRC web chat facility. It was a convenient, quick and free method of contacting HMRC.
