Save Money on Your Shopping with Approved Food

Written by Karen Bryan

My £29 shop from Approved FoodI decided to try out the Approved Food site after I saw their offer of 12 free tubs of Ambrosia Rice with Apple on Facebook. Most items sold on Approved Food have “Best Before” dates which have already, or are about to, expire. They don’t sell fresh food with “Use By” dates.

You get free delivery on your first order, if you spend at least £30. Standard delivery costs £5.25 for up to 25kgs, for most of the UK.

I got a pretty good haul for just over £30, which included 500gr Honey Nut Shredded Wheat for 99p, pomegranate and orange juice for 33p per litre and Campbell’s 600gr Aspargus Soup for 25p. I also bought some toiletries which were good value. Below are the details of my order.

I received an email a couple of days after placing the order informing me that the conditioner was unavailable and that my Approved  Food account would be credited with the £1. I emailed Approved Food to say that I thought they should refund the £1 to the card used for payment, rather than giving a credit. They agreed to make the refund to my credit card.

I ordered on a Sunday afternoon and received my order on the Friday. I received an email on the Friday morning informing me of the one hour delivery slot. I later received another email saying that my delivery had been delayed, I assumed by the snow. However the delivery did arrive within the original one hour slot.

The items were expertly packed, with the jars of sauces in bubble wrap.

So far I’ve tried these items:

  • Honey Nut Shredded Wheat – not quite as crisp as they should be, but once you add milk you don’t notice this
  • Osem Wheaten Crackers – very good
  • Beit Hashita Black Pitted Olive – very good
  • Ambrosia Rice with Apple – I’m not keen on the flavour
  • Sirco Pomegranate and Orange Juice – tastes fine but the colour’s a bit unappetising
  • Thurstons Petit Beurre Biscuits – a bit bland
  • Ainsley Harriott Wild Mushroom Bulgar Wheat – fine

I reckon that you can save money on your household shopping by using Approved Food, even after factoring in the delivery charge. It makes sense to buy a reasonable number of items in one shop, to keep down delivery costs.
