You may have noticed a lot of non geographic phone numbers, mainly used by businesses. In the UK a geographic number is one with an area code such as 01289 for Berwick upon Tweed and 0207 for central London. Numbers starting with 0844, 0845, 0870 and 0871 are called non-geographic numbers. The problem arises when rates to call a non-geographic number are higher than calling a geographic number; sometimes companies change their number to a higher rate non-geographic number and keep some of the difference in the call price to boost their profits.
It’s really annoying if you have an inclusive calls package and believe that all your UK calls are covered, but in fact many non-geogrpahic calls are charged as extras. We have a BT inclusive package which includes 0845 and 0870 numbers.
However, you may be able to save money by avoiding using the higher rate phone numbers by searching on the Say No To 0870 site. There you can often find alternative geographic numbers or even freephone numbers which help you avoid paying the higher call rates.
